The opening reception for my photography exhibit was so much fun! I was surprised how busy it was all night. We closed down late and sold several pieces. I’m thrilled! Thanks everyone! Here are a few shots of the evening. I only had time to take a few quick photos when I first arrived, but there were already some early birds there so I had to put my camera away pretty quick. Thankfully, Sarah Carmody took some and my friend Christine brought her camera too.

The installation will be on exhibit through the end of May, so please stop by and tell any friends you know who like fine art black and white photography. I have a few color pieces there too. It’s at S. Carmody Photography, 2707 Sutton Blvd, in Maplewood. Open gallery hours will be posted soon. If you’d like to see it in the meantime, let me know and I might be able to arrange a private showing.

I’ve worked up a bit of fun for you smartphone users… stop by the opening reception of my gallery exhibit “Visceral” and you’ll see 2D barcode technology being put to use. Bring your smart phone, armed with a scanning app such as QuickMark or NeoReader, and you’ll be able to see more information about each photograph than what’s posted on the wall. Mommy & Me Days are back! – St. Louis Children’s Photography

Mommy & Me days were always one of my most popular offerings of the year, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I haven’t been able to offer them the last two years. I’ve had several requests in the last couple of weeks, so I’m bringing them back! I’ll be setting the dates for these shortly…so stay tuned!

Sold some art, drank some wine courtesy Garland Wines, ate yummy food including Mom’s Originals, listened to an awesome acapella group called A-Men, and made new friends at the Riverside Gallery during the Webster Groves Art Crawl put on by 63119Art. It’s almost November, so it’s almost time for the 4th Annual 3-Day Art Crawl presented by 63119Art – a neighborhood art tour through Webster Groves.

Join me for this special event on November 6th, 7th, and 8th. Selections of my work will be displayed and for sale at the Riverside Gallery at 13 West Moody (next to Llewelyn’s.) The Friday night opening includes a 10% discount on art purchases, and samplings of wines and beers from Garland Wines and Schlafly Beer.

Mom’s recipe contest

We all have our favorite recipes Mom always made…what’s yours? Share it here and it could win you a prize! As we prepare for Mother’s Day, thinking about my mom brings back memories about all the little things she did for me, and still does. Food has to be in there, after all, she spent countless hours planning meals, shopping for meals, and cooking meals. My mom’s a great cook who makes dishes that could be in Bon Apettit, but the basic dishes from my childhood stand out in my memories. I remember the ultra-moist chocolate cake she used to make for picnics, her meatloaf, and the enchiladas she’d have us help her assemble. I still love my mom’s tuna casserole, believe it or not!

Life doesn’t wait for recessions to end

So, I have a plan to help you capture it in the meantime. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with continued bookings during this recession we’re apparently in, and it warms my heart to know that those clients are valuing the captured memories they make during their portrait sessions. Other purchases might need to be put off right now, but life just doesn’t stop and wait for recessions to be over. Those babies are growing fast. There’s never going to be another time to capture them the way they are now. I’m not going to try to convince you that you won’t have memories without photos, because we all have our minds. But if you’re like me, your mind is filled to capacity these days, and my memory needs triggers. The photos on my walls trigger those memories, and especially in times like these, they make me smile.

During economic downturns, it’s all about prioritizing; choosing which purchases can wait and which one’s can’t. Enjoying family and the simple life, and getting value for your money.

My custom photography is like getting 3 things for the price of one. First, you get a fun day together, while I photograph you. Sometimes we don’t set aside that time to create memories, but for a session with me, you have to. It’s scheduled. It’s on the calendar. And then you also get beautiful pieces of art for your home. Something you might otherwise hold off on, if it weren’t also going to satisfy a third purpose…a family heirloom that will bring you incredible joy for years to come. What better kind of art to fill your walls with?

I do have clients who’ve expressed the need to cut back, even on things that are important to them, like portraits.
